You will report to the Bitumen Value Chain Optimization (BVCO) Integration Lead, and play a key role within the BVCO and / or Downstream improvement strategic focus area of our enterprise technology team. You will identify technologies that align with the strategic program, assess the technology readiness level, and develop project(s) to move the technology to the next assessment stage.
You will use your expertise to:
- Participate in the planning, design development, and construction of pilot and demonstration facilities
- Determine and analyze operating conditions and performance as defined by technology development guidelines and the technology and innovation management system
- Analyze the technical merit and economics of technology as new information becomes available, and prepare ongoing reports to leaders
- Manage the safety, quality, cost, and schedule of the technology development projects in conjunction with key partners
- Influence and gain the support of other business units in order to successfully implement technology pilots and demonstrations
- Participate in risk assessment and hazard and operability studies to identify and plan for potential implementation barriers
- Support the management of external technology partners (e.g. other oil sands operators or technology vendors) and contractors
- Create partnerships in order to coordinate specified areas of training, pre-commissioning activities, mechanical completion, hand-over, performance testing, commissioning, and start-up
- Oversee the implementation of required reviews and lessons learned in areas like value improvement practices, project process hazards analysis, maintainability and constructability, and technical standards

Must-haves (minimum requirements):
- Five years of process engineering experience or a related field
- A university degree, preferably in engineering, applied science, or an equivalent
- An exceptional operational understanding of bitumen production, extraction, upgrading, and refinery operations
- A deep technical capability to calculate and analyze complex processes and problems from multiple angles in order to fully understand the problem and arrive at an optional solution
- The ability to design pilot and demo test programs and critically assess data from these programs using principles of mass and energy balances, heat transfer, thermodynamics, etc.
- The ability to work collaboratively and exercise strong decision-making processes in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
- The ability to take large, complex multivariable problems, break them down into manageable tasks, and execute
- Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing
Preference for:
- A graduate degree in chemical engineering or a related discipline
- A professional designation (e.g. APEGA)
Where youll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:
- You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 6th Ave S.W.
- Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
- Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible candidates
- Occasional business travel to demonstration sites, refineries, conferences and other technology forums
