JSEG Systems Engineer ICPS Payload (Senior Level) in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama, United States

The contractor shall provide support to the SLS Program in the areas of systems engineering for the Spacecraft/Payload Integration and Evolution (SPIE) office. This support includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Develop and maintain a SPIE Integrated Spacecraft and Payload Element (ISPE) Instrumentation Program and Command List (IPCL) describing data that will be telemetered from the SLS vehicle.
  • Support the SPIE Integrated Avionics and Software (IAS) Element Discipline Lead Engineer (EDLE) and providing expertise for the integration of the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) avionics and software with other SLS elements.
  • Manage the SPIE Standalone Sensor and Telemetry Document, which defines and controls ISPE operational, engineering, and developmental standalone sensor measurements, and the Operational Flight Instrumentation (OFI) and Developmental Flight Instrumentation (DFI) telemetry being downlinked from ICPS.
  • Review and present Change Requests (CRs) for SLS Category 1 documents as a SPIE CPE (Change Package Engineer).
  • Represent SPIE in technical and programmatic forums as a SPIE IAS Subject Matter Expert (SME).
  • Attend and participate in scheduled meetings and perform other engineering tasks as assigned by SPIE IAS leadership.

Status reports or presentations will be delivered as needed or requested by the SPIE IAS EDLE and ES13 Team Lead.

Degree in Engineering, Science, Math, or related technical field from an ABET accredited institution is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 9 years of experience, Masters with at least 13 years of experience, or BS with at least 15 years of experience.  



The successful candidate must have experience with programmatic planning, monitoring, and control of efforts associated with system design and hardware production.

  • Knowledge of complex systems engineering life cycle end-to-end development ranging from requirements development, functional design, hardware integration, requirement verification, and flight readiness that ultimately lead to flight hardware certification is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive level briefings, will have negotiation skills demonstrated through complex technical problem solving, and will have a demonstrated ability to breakdown complex problems or issues into manageable pieces.
  • Hands-on experience with the physical integration of payloads for the Shuttle, the International Space Station (ISS), or other launch vehicles as well as the documentation associated with this integration is highly desired.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills are required.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook) are required.
  • An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program is desired.


Personnel are required to be self-motivated, effective team players familiar with working in a dynamic work environment who are willing to assume a Systems Integration role in this SLS systems design and definition effort.

Work Environment 

 

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

 

 

Physical Requirements 

 

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

 

 

Equipment and Machines 

 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

 


 

Attendance 

 

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

 

 

Other Essential Functions 

 

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
